If you just chipped a tooth, the first thing we’d tell you if you called the office is this:
“You’re going to be okay. This is usually a really straightforward fix.”
It might feel like a big deal right now—especially if it’s visible or feels sharp—but chipped teeth are one of the most common things we help patients with, and in many cases, we can make it look like nothing ever happened.

First — What Happened?
Most chips come from pretty normal situations:
- Biting into something harder than expected
- A fall or bump
- Old dental work giving way
- Grinding or clenching over time
Sometimes it’s obvious right away. Other times patients just notice:
- A rough edge
- Sensitivity to cold
- Or “something feels off”
What Should You Do Right Now?
Nothing complicated—we’d keep it simple:
- Rinse with warm water to clean the area
- Avoid chewing on that side for now
- If it feels sharp, you can cover it with sugar-free gum or dental wax
- If you happen to have the piece, hang onto it (but don’t stress if you don’t)
And then—just give us a call. We’ll take it from there.
What Happens When You Come In
This is where most people are surprised.
They come in expecting something major… and it ends up being a pretty quick, comfortable visit.
We’ll take a look, maybe a quick image if needed, and then walk you through exactly what we’re seeing. From there, it usually falls into one of a few simple categories.
Small Chip
This is the most common.
We smooth it out or add a little tooth-colored material to rebuild the edge. It’s shaped, polished, and blended so it matches your tooth.
Most of the time, you’re in and out in under an hour.
Medium Chip
If a little more structure is missing, we may recommend a slightly more durable cosmetic option—but still very straightforward.
The goal is always the same: make it look natural and feel normal again.
Larger Break
If more of the tooth is involved, we’ll talk through stronger, longer-lasting options like a crown.
Still very fixable—just a different approach.
If There’s Sensitivity or Pain
Occasionally, the chip gets close to the nerve. If that’s the case, we’ll explain everything clearly and take care of it before it turns into something bigger.
The Question Everyone Asks…
“Is it going to look the same?”
That’s always the goal.
We’re not just fixing the tooth—we’re paying attention to:
- Shape
- Color
- How it blends with everything around it
Most patients look in the mirror after and say some version of, “Wait… where was it?”
Why We Like to See It Sooner Rather Than Later
A small chip is usually a quick fix.
If it’s left alone:
- It can wear down further
- Become more sensitive
- Or turn into a bigger repair than it needed to be
Nothing urgent in most cases—but definitely worth taking care of early while it’s easy.
If You’re On the Fence About Calling
Totally understandable.
A lot of patients hesitate because they’re expecting:
- A long appointment
- Something expensive
- Or a complicated process
Most of the time, it’s none of those.
It’s just a quick visit, a clear plan, and a fix that lets you move on with your day.
